Tampa Bay sports fans are in a state of bliss. Both the Tampa Bay Rays and The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are playing great. The excitement factor is palpable, and as hot as the weather. On Sunday, the Bucs halftime locker room was so quiet it was eerie as the Minnesota Vikings had whipped the Bucs in every area. Apparently, Donald Penn broke the dead silence and started talking a little. It was contagious and soon other players chimed in. It was then time for “Captain Comeback”, quarterback Josh Freeman. Second half, what a comeback. Freeman passed for 191 yards, and the Bucs rallied with a 4 yard scoring run by LeGarrette Blount. finishing with a 24-20 victory. Considering that the Bucs were outgained by 284-62 yards in the first half, this was a very impressive comeback. By winning, the NFC South is all knotted up with the Bucs, the New Orleans Saints, and the Atlanta Falcons at 1-1. The Carolina Panthers sit at the bottom at 0-2, But they can’t feel too bad with Cam Newton at the helm. He looks like the real deal. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, you too have the real deal in Josh Freeman. As he says, “I just try to win”. It’s working. “You know “Winning” as the new saying goes.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers feel better about Josh Freeman, their second year quarterback. More important, number 5 Josh Freeman feels better about himself. He apparently looks like a different player, like a QB who now knows what he wants to do, and has to do to be a winner. He’s looking more diversified, trying pump fakes and studying other teams who play the cover 2. Nothing is as good as playing to really learn how to play. That said, receivers coach Eric Yarber is still looking for his receiving corps to emerge. Remember 7 of the 11 Bucs receivers are first or second year players. This is tough in the NFL, ripe with seasoned and very talented players. Still, all of us ardent football fans can’t wait for the season to start.
