NHL Hockey in Montreal

If you want Montreal Canadiens tickets at Le Centre Bell (Bell Centre), you'll have to get them through some special promo well in advance. To most Canadians, the team known affectionately as "The Habs" is the equivalent of baseball's New York Yankees; they're a blue-chip franchise well known for winning championships (24 in the franchise's history), they've been around a while (hated and loved since 1909), and some of the sport's greatest (Guy Lafleur, Maurice Richard) have passed through the franchise. To Toronto natives, "Habs" is the most vile four-letter word in existence. To the 21,700 Montreal natives lucky enough to score tickets, the Habs are a religion, the local culture, and as much a part of the town as the Red Sox are a part of Boston . Coaching God's hockey emissary on Earth this year is Guy Carbonneau.

The Men of the Montreal Candiens

The Offense

Heading up the Habs this year is team captain and all around warm-and-fuzzy guy Saku Koivu, the first non-Canadian to ever don the coveted "C" on a Habs jersey.  The charismatic Finn recovered from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma to continue a strong career backing hot-streak skaters Michael Ryder (30 goals last season) and Chris Higgins (21 goals last season). If you decide to sell your soul and root for the Habs this year, then God be with you (but let's be honest-He probably won't), then you'll want to keep a sharp eye on any offensive line including Sergei Samsonov and Alex Kovalev. The deadly Russian duo has massive potential in odd-man rushes and is reputed to have great passing synergy.

Goaltending

Habs goaltending should be pretty decent this year, especially with the addition of frosh 'tender David Aebischer. French goalie Cristobal Huet isn't remarkable in the regular season, but shines in the playoffs with a 92% save average. The recent addition of mandatory shootouts puts a lot more pressure on yet-to-be-proven Aebischer, who may just get scored on more times than your sister.

Enforcers

At 6'0, 215 lbs., defenseman Mathieu Dandenault embodies a lethal combination of speed and bulk. Unlike most NHL defensemen, Dandenault and his fellow d-man Janne Niinimaa (6'1, 220 lbs.) are unusually quick off the draw, meaning they're handy with the hockey stick and don't need a lot of speed to dish out lethal blows. While Montreal isn't as dirty as the Tie Domi-types from Toronto , it has a rep to maintain as an Original Six team. Watch for players like Niinimaa and Dandenault to carry that chip on their shoulders throughout the regular season, taking out prepubescent-type angst out on people's heads.

The Habs' Ticket to the Playoffs

Montreal is usually a pretty solid team throughout the regular season. They won't have a problem qualifying in the playoffs-their biggest problem is holding their defensive line against the Hurricanes and breaching the Conference semi-finals.

" Can't Miss" Montreal Canadiens Tickets

It's been more than a decade since the Habs last won a Stanley Cup. With all those expectations riding, the best games to watch are against teams who prevented them from tasting championships. The best games are naturally those that occur in the lead up to the post-season, especially those involving the Hurricanes (2/6/07) and the Bruins (4/3/07). You can never go wrong with Montreal Canadiens tickets to a game vs. Toronto : it's the greatest metaphor in existence for the battle for Canadian primacy between the forces of not-so-good (Habs) and not-so-evil (Leafs).
