To right their sinking ship the Raiders turned to one of their own. Ex-Raiders lineman and Ex-Raiders head coach Art Shell became guess what? The Raiders New Head Coach for the 2006 NFL Season. By naming Shell his coach Al Davis has admitted that he made a mistake in firing him back in 1994.

That should have been obvious. As a player Art Shell went to the Pro Bowl 8 times. To help out, and instill that storied Raider derangement in the players, Shell has old teammates like Fred Biletnikoff, and Willie Brown to help out.

But what does Shell have to work with? More than meets the eye. Quarterback Kerry Collins hasn't distinguished himself as a member of the Raiders, but thinking he might need a little push, Shell signed free agent Aaron Brooks. Brooks had his own troubles with the Saints the last two seasons but still re-wrote the record books in New Orleans and led the Saints to their only NFL Playoff win in team history. With all the travails the Saints went through in 2005 a new start may be just the thing Brooks needs to push Collins out of the starting lineup. The battle between the two veterans can't do anything but help the Raiders. And then there's Randy Moss. Moss failed to spark the Raiders to the postseason in his first year in Oakland but still posted respectable numbers, catching 60 balls for 1, 005 yards. The problem isn't Moss, it's getting him on the field with someone that can reach him. Brooks may be that someone.

But for Brooks and Moss to connect they have to be on the field. That means playing defense and the NFL Draft may be the Raiders salvation. Already stocked at cornerback, the Raiders should lock down the secondary with their choice of Michael Huff, who they project as a free safety. Huff, who hails from the University of Texas , was a three year starter and rated as one of the best defensive backs in the draft. In Round 2 the Raiders continued the defensive splurge with the choice of outside linebacker Thomas Howard of UTEP. Another safety, Darnell Bing of USC, completed the makeover.

Art Shell is back and Raiders tickets are the sweetest thing on the West Coast once again. Don't kid yourself, these aren't the same old Raiders we've been shaking our heads at the last two years. The bad attitude is back.
