Poor Matt Millen; the President and CEO of the Detroit Lions must be working on his ninth life as he brings in yet another head coach to help right this foundering franchise. Marty Mornhinweg, Steve Mariucci and now Rod Marinelli have tried to get things straightened out. High draft choices that either failed to mature or suffered debilitating injuries have been the name of the song for Millen's franchise. The fans that purchase Detroit Lions tickets are hanging in there, but how much more can these loyalists take?

Since the Lions joined the NFL in 1934, the history has been proud and exciting from Bobby Layne, Doak Walker and Lou Creekmur to Lem Barney, Billy Sims and Barry Sanders, this franchise has produced some of the greatest players pro football has ever seen. But as happens to all organizations, the down years come and sometimes it's hard to break out. The Fords turned the keys of the family business over to Millen but little has changed. Millen didn't wait long last season to launch Mariucci. After a Thanksgiving Day stinker, the coach was sent packing and Dick Jauron was brought in to coach out the string.

The Joey Harrington era at quarterback is over in Detroit . It's hard to criticize Millen for drafting him, but they fell way short in developing the raw skills he brought from Oregon . Former Bengal Jon Kitna takes over. Josh McCown, late of the Arizona Cardinals, will back him up. Millen also signed Corey Bradford to bolster a suspect receiving corps that features some high draft choices. The best move of all may be the appointment of Mike Martz to run the Lions offense. Martz may be the missing link that brings the Lions back to respectability. They've always played pretty good defense and they'll be better with the addition of the number one and two draft choices. Linebacker Ernie Sims, out of Florida State and safety Daniel Bullocks of Nebraska should contribute immediately. Running back Brian Calhoun from Wisconsin may help but must work hard if he is to beat out the veterans there.

This is probably Millen's last chance to get it right but it appears that he's made some pretty solid moves. Fans will buy Detroit Lions tickets and pack Ford Field again in 2006 to root for their beloved team. It looks like a good bet they'll finally be rewarded with a team worthy of their glorious past.
