The Chicago Bears fielded one of the best defenses in the league last season yet it's that very crew that let them down in the NFL Playoffs. Carolina waltzed into Soldier Field and made Ron Rivera's defense appear ridiculous. Charles "Peanut" Tillman proved once and for all that he's miscast as a corner back and belongs over at safety. This evolution can be marked back to the momentous occasion when Mrs. Virginia Halas kicked her son Michael upstairs and out of reach of important day-to-day decisions. She turned the reins over to Ted Philips who got a stadium built, brought in Jerry Angelo who eventually brought in Lovie Smith. Angelo has drafted well and his free agent picks have been solid for the most part. Of course, if you haven't reached the Super Bowl, what have you really accomplished?

GM Angelo signed Dante Wesley and Ricky Manning Jr. from Carolina to bolster the defensive backfield and make up for the loss of the retired Jerry Azumah. He signed Brian Griese to back up the oft-injured Rex Grossman. It was more defensive help during the 2006 NFL Draft as Angelo selected Danieal Manning from Abilene Christian and Devin Hester from Miami , the latter more for his special-teams prowess. Next he select d-lineman Dusty Dvoracek from Oklahoma , linebacker Jamar Williams out of Arizona and Mark Anderson from Alabama . The Bears were expected to draft a difference maker tight end that would make Bears fans forget Mike Ditka. It didn't happen but they did sign free agents Tim Day of Oregon and Cooper Wallace of Auburn . Perhaps they'll get lucky with one of these two hopefuls.

Angelo's draft strategy was sound. He figures the offense is way better than a year ago with a healthy Grossman and Brian Griese waiting in the wings. Keeping the defense strong and improving it in the backfield was a must. Fans that gobble up Chicago Bears tickets should be pleased with the 2006 edition of their beloved Monsters. Of course, there is only one thing that will satisfy them; another Lombardi Trophy to display in the lobby of Halas Hall.
