If you purchased Atlanta Falcons tickets last year or at least followed the team on television, you are painfully aware that your heroes finished 8-8 last year in the NFC South Division of the National Football League. Coach Jim Mora's crew finished out of the playoffs after a promising season a year ago. From all appearances, Falcons GM Rich McKay seems to know exactly what submarined his 2006 NFL campaign; a porous defense. McKay has taken immediate step to correct the problem, sacrificing position in the recent NFL Draft to get it done. That may be viewed as heresy in some quarters around the league but McKay wants a big turnaround and won't be satisfied with anything less.

Back in 1966, when the Falcons joined the NFL, Atlanta was abuzz with the prospect of having an NFL franchise to root for. Coach Norb Hecker, late of the Green Bay Packers and First Round draft pick Tommy Nobis brought with them excitement and promise. Of course, when a new team arrives in town, the local populace invariably has their hopes dashed in short order and such was the case down south. The Falcons experience their ups and downs as most franchises do, until Dan Reeve came along in the late 90's and led a team led by Chris Chandler and Jamal Anderson to Super Bowl XXXIII and an eventual loss to the Denver Broncos. Now the Michael Vick era has taken Atlanta by storm but his physical brilliance hasn't been enough to punch a return ticket to another Super Bowl.

The defense should indeed be better as GM McKay has brought in John Abraham from the Jets. That move cost him a first round draft choice so it had better pay off. Big addition Lawyer Malloy arrives from Buffalo to solidify the secondary. In the second round of the draft McKay selected Jimmy Williams of Virginia Tech in a continued effort to bolster the deep defensive backfield. Williams and DeAngelo Hall should work well together, former Hokies that they are. McKay went offense in the third round picking Jerious Norwood of Mississippi State. Let's face it, Warrick Dunn isn't getting any younger.

So, all you loyal fans that purchase Atlanta Falcons tickets, it appears as though you are getting your money's worth out of the GM. He's made some moves to right the ship. Now it's time to sit back and wait for the season to start. Perhaps a return trip to the biggest game of all is in your future.
