It might be somewhat of a surprise to know that the Arizona Cardinal's team is the oldest professional football team in America. In 1898 they began as the Morgan Athletic Club. Chris O'Brien formed the Athletic Club and went on to buy used jerseys from the University of Chicago. The jerseys were kind of a faded maroon, which O'Brien described as "Cardinal Red". So you see the germination of the name. How did they become the Cardinals? Yes they took the nickname from the Cardinal color red that they wore in their early years. Now they had the name, and, at the time the team played at a location of 61st and Racine Streets, thus the Racine Street Cardinals.

The American Professional Football Association came immediately before the NFL, which began playing in 1920. Just like animals staking out their territory, the Cardinals had to get their place in Chicago opposing a team called the Tigers. O'Brien's Cardinals challenged the Tigers to a game. At stake: winner stays, loser leaves town. Pretty huge game. Cardinals 6-0 victory on a touchdown scored by the legend, Paddy Driscoll. Great game obviously, but truthfully for the next 26 seasons in the league, the Cardinals were pretty bland. One standout moment was in 1929 on Thanksgiving when Ernie Nevers scored all 40 points that the team got. That record still holds up today. By the way, by then the Chicago Bears were in town, and yes they were the team to take the 40-6 loss.

The next important period for the Cardinals began when the Bidwill family bought the team. Charles W. Bidwill literally started the ball rolling in 1932. William V. Bidwill now operates the team. Even during the depression in the 1930's, and during the 1940's with World War II still being fought, the Cardinals were playing. Maybe it was simply timing, but just as the war ended, the Cardinals finally had a group of guys that were winning, in 1947 NFL Champions, and in 1948 an NFL Western division title. That victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in 1947 stood out. It was not until 1998 playing against the Dallas Cowboys that the team rose up again in the NFL Wildcard game.
