Pearl Jam grew out of the remains of Mother Love Bone and the influence of other grunge band members. When Mother Love Bone fell apart due to the death of Andrew Wood, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard put together a demo and began casting around for band members. The demo tape fell into the hands of former Stone Temple Pilots drummer Jack Irons who passed the tape along to Eddie Vedder. The chemistry was there and the band immediately set to work.
Where did Pearl Jam get its name? Rumor attributed the moniker to Vedder’s grandmother Pearl and her peyote laced preserves. Later, band members would attribute the name to chance and an evening watching Neil Young in a jam session. After originally appearing as Mookie Blaylock, the group finally settled on Pearl Jam and recorded their first album “Ten.”

But after the Grunge movement burst on to the scene behind the emergence of Nirvana, Pearl Jams first recording produced three singles in “Even Flow”, “Alive”, and “Jeremy”, the last of which won MTV’s Video of the Year.
