Getting Tampa Bay Devil Rays tickets to games at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg Florida is hardly ever a problem. In their short 8-year history in the Eastern Division of the American League, the team has finished in last place in seven of those eight years. That's a trend owner Stuart Sternberg would like to see ended. When Lou Piniella, the Devil Rays manager since 2003, could not bring the team into contention, he blamed ownership for what he called, "an insufficient commitment to winning." 

Piniella allowed the owners to buy him out of the last year of his contract, and Sternburg hired 51-year-old Joe Maddon as manager. Maddon who had been the bench coach for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, is described as a personable man with excellent communications skills. This is a far cry from the fiery Piniella; who often employed a "tough love" attitude with his players. He could often be seen in the dugout verbally blasting players who made errors or base running mistakes. He would sometimes even go so far as to chew out catcher Toby Hall for not calling the right pitch.

Other than the addition of Maddon and some other front office moves, the Devil Rays begin the 2006 campaign with few changes to their 40-man roster. The lineup will be highlighted by outfielder Carl Crawford who batted .301 last season with 21 homers, 81 RBI's and 46 stolen bases. But an emerging offensive weapon can be found in second baseman Jorge Cantu. The infielder hit 28 homeruns and drove in 117 runs in 2005. He has already made some pre-season noise as a hitting star for the Mexican National team playing in this spring's World Baseball Classic. 

Aubrey Huff, Julio Lugo, and outfielder Jonny Gomes also return this season and the team is hopeful Rocco Baldelli, who missed all of last year due to a back injury will be patrolling centerfield this summer. The pitching staff remains pretty much intact. Lefthander Scott Kazmir is still thought to be the ace of the staff. He'll lead the starting rotation that will include Casey Fossum, Mark Hendrickson and Seth McClung, all of whom will be looking to improve on last year's performances, though Kazmir and Fossum did provide good strikeout numbers with 174 and 128, respectively. Out in the bullpen, right-handed closer Chad Orvella failed to impress, winning 3 games while saving only one in 36-mound appearances. The new kids in town are home grown rookie outfielder, Delmon Young, third baseman Sean Burroughs acquired from the San Diego Padres, and righty reliever Edwin Jackson from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Another change occurred by Sternburg. A poll of Tampa Bay Devil Rays season ticket holders suggests that the team; might drop the term "Devil" from the team's name making them simply the "Tampa Bay Rays". The organization may not be to the point where they'll do just about anything to sell more tickets but with nowhere to go but up, it could become a distinct possibility.
