And, just for good measure, they signed free agent slugger Sammy Sosa to provide some added punch. For the first half of the season it appeared as though management had pushed all the right buttons.
The Orioles raced straight to the top of the Eastern Division of the American League and remained there for 62 straight days, keeping ahead of both Division rivals, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. But, just before the All-Star break, disaster struck. Injuries sidelined catcher Javy Lopez, Brian Roberts, and Sammy Sosa. Palmiero, after getting his milestone hit, was suspended for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy. He would not return for the rest of the season. The Orioles went 30-62 over the second half in one of the worst slides in Major League history. First year manager Lee Mazzilli was fired and replaced by pitching coach Sam Perlozzo. Sydney Ponson finished with a dismal 6-11 record and an ERA of over six. After the season he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. The team then allowed Palmiero, Sosa and outfielder B.J. Surhoff to file for free agency and Baltimore was unable to re-sign closer B.J. Ryan who went on to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Team owner Peter Angelos promises that the team will be coming back strong in 2006. Rebuilding the team around the solid performances of Tejada and Roberts, both of whom finished the year with 300 plus batting averages, combined for 44 homeruns and 171 RBI's between them. Thwarted in their efforts to sign any "big name" free agents, they did manage to bring aboard right hand pitcher Kris Benson from the Mets, outfielder Corey Patterson from the Cubs and Kevin Millar from the Red Sox.
Changes in the front office and on the bench also figure big in the team's plans. Former Oriole pitcher, Mike Flanagan was named general manager. And Perlozzo scored big when he convinced longtime Atlanta Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone to come onboard to handle the young pitching staff. So, it appears it won't just be the crab cakes sold at Orioles Park 's concession stands that will sell Baltimore Orioles tickets this year.
